‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Trailer Stuns With Martin Scorsese Cameo and Ebo’s Long-Awaited Live-Action Debut

This is the way, and apparently, it’s also the way back to theaters. The brand-new trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu has finally arrived, and it’s packed with enough surprises to send the fandom into hyperspace.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Trailer Stuns With Martin Scorsese Cameo and Ebo’s Debut

From a shockingly recognizable voice cameo to the long-rumored live-action debut of a deep-cut Clone Wars bounty hunter, Lucasfilm isn’t holding anything back as it gears up for the franchise’s big-screen return.

Let’s break down the biggest reveals.

Martin Scorsese in Star Wars? Yes, Really.

One of the trailer’s most unexpected moments comes early, when Din Djarin seeks information from an alien character with a very familiar voice. That voice belongs to legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, a cameo that Lucasfilm has confirmed.

Scorsese’s involvement had not been previously announced, making the reveal even more jaw-dropping. The connection isn’t entirely out of nowhere, though. Director Jon Favreau previously appeared in Scorsese’s 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, so the collaboration feels like a fun full-circle moment.

In a galaxy far, far away, even cinematic legends can pop up in the most unexpected corners.

Din Djarin Unmasked– Again

Fans of The Mandalorian know that Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) rarely removes his helmet. It’s part of his creed. But the new trailer shows him unmasked not once, but twice, first when he’s brought before a villain, and again in what appears to be a high-stakes confrontation with a monstrous creature.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Trailer Ebo’s Long-Awaited Live-Action Debut

While Din has removed his helmet in pivotal moments before, seeing him exposed in a theatrical Star Wars film raises the emotional stakes. Something serious is unfolding here.

The Hutts Are Back, And Grogu Is in Danger

The trailer teases Din going up against the Hutts, with one threatening ominously, “You will suffer, and then it will be his turn.” The “his” is almost certainly Grogu, now officially Din’s adopted apprentice.

Adding to the intrigue, Jeremy Allen White voices Rotta the Hutt, son of Jabba, who was first introduced in 2008’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This time, Rotta speaks Basic, a notable twist for longtime fans.

Meanwhile, Sigourney Weaver makes her Star Wars debut as a New Republic pilot determined to prevent another galactic war.

Zeb Returns, And Embo Finally Steps Into Live-Action

The trailer also features Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels, enthusiastically embracing Grogu with a joyful, “I like this kid!” It’s another animated-to-live-action bridge that strengthens the interconnected Star Wars universe.

But the real deep-cut reveal? Embo.

The Kyuzo bounty hunter from Star Wars: The Clone Wars is officially making his live-action debut, and he looks just as ominous as ever. Recognizable by his wide-brimmed metal hat (which doubles as both shield and weapon) and his bowcaster, Embo appears to be working for the Hutts and possibly hunting Din Djarin.

Longtime fans know Embo’s résumé is stacked. During The Clone Wars, he:

  • Fought alongside Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano
  • Survived a clash with Darth Maul and Savage Opress
  • Joined Boba Fett’s crew
  • Became entangled in an assassination plot targeting Supreme Chancellor Palpatine
  • Even dueled Anakin himself

After the Battle of Jakku, canon material revealed that Embo received a New Republic pardon and retired to farming on Felucia. But clearly, retirement didn’t stick.

His live-action arrival could elevate him from cult favorite to full-blown big-screen threat,  much like Cad Bane’s transition to live-action in The Book of Boba Fett.

Are We Going Back to Hoth?

Perhaps the most eyebrow-raising visual in the trailer is Din and Grogu riding a sleigh pulled by Tauntauns, creatures long associated with Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back and the icy planet Hoth.

Tauntauns are canonically native to Hoth, so their appearance strongly suggests the film may revisit the iconic ice world for the first time in live-action since 1980. If true, that raises fascinating questions. Why would Din, now working for the New Republic, return to a former Rebel hideout?

The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Trailer- A Pivotal Moment for Star Wars

Is there something left behind from the Galactic Civil War? Or is Lucasfilm simply leaning into nostalgia in a big way?

Either way, it’s a bold tease.

A Pivotal Moment for Star Wars

When Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hit theaters in 2019, it marked the end of the sequel trilogy and the last theatrical Star Wars release. Despite crossing $1 billion globally, it received the weakest reviews of the episodic saga.

Since then, numerous theatrical projects were announced but never materialized. “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is the first to actually make it to the starting line.

The film also arrives during a new leadership era at Lucasfilm. Dave Filoni, a longtime creative force behind The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian, has stepped into the role of president following Kathleen Kennedy’s departure, serving alongside co-president Lynwen Brennan.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. This isn’t just another Star Wars movie; it’s a test of what theatrical Star Wars looks like in 2026.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Release Date

“The Mandalorian and Grogu” hits theaters on May 22, 2026.

Notably, it’s only the second Disney-era Star Wars film to be released in May. The franchise shifted to December releases starting with 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with Solo: A Star Wars Story being the lone modern summer exception.

Now, Star Wars is returning to its original summer blockbuster roots and bringing Grogu along for the ride.

If this trailer is any indication, the galaxy far, far away is about to feel a lot bigger… and a lot weirder.
