Josh Peck is facing a surge of online criticism after posting and then deleting a video that many viewers interpreted as making fun of a family attempting to save their home from a fire.
The actor, 39, became a household name in the 2000s playing the affable, goofy teen opposite Drake Bell on Nickelodeon’s hit sitcom Drake & Josh. In the years since, Peck has worked steadily in television, film, and digital media, cultivating an image as one of the network’s more grounded former child stars.
That reputation took a hit this week.
The Video That Ignited the Backlash
In the Instagram clip, Peck first shared footage of a house visibly engulfed in flames. Several people could be seen outside the property, frantically throwing buckets of water toward the fire in what appeared to be a desperate, chaotic attempt to slow the damage.
The scene looked raw and frightening, the kind of moment most people associate with panic, shock, and potential tragedy.
Peck then cut to a second piece of video: himself at a car wash, standing beside his Tesla and spraying the pavement instead of the vehicle. The caption read, “It’s in the effort and not the results.”
Viewers quickly concluded that he was drawing a comparison between his actions and the family’s struggle, reading the post as ridicule rather than satire.
The actor removed the upload not long after it went live. But as is often the case, deletion did little to stop the spread. Screen recordings began circulating within minutes, particularly on Reddit, where the clip gained traction on the popular r/Popculturechat forum before jumping to X and Instagram comment sections.
Anger Spreads Across Social Media
The criticism was swift and, in many places, brutal.
“You have to be a particular kind of moron to think people would find any humor in this,” one Reddit commenter wrote, in a post that drew hundreds of upvotes.
Others accused Peck of being detached from the realities facing ordinary people. The visual of him near a high-end electric car became a flashpoint, with some arguing it amplified what they saw as a display of privilege.
“Going out of your way to be a piece of sh** like this and filming it in front of your shiny nice car just goes to show how incredibly out of touch wealthy people are,” another critic wrote.
On Instagram, users flooded Peck’s most recent posts with demands for an explanation. Some labeled the moment “tone-deaf,” while others questioned why anyone would attempt humor built around what might be the worst day of someone’s life.
A recurring theme in the backlash was disbelief. Many comments echoed a similar sentiment: Why would he think this would land well?

The controversy has prompted some fans to revisit earlier moments involving Peck’s relationship with former co-star Drake Bell.
After Bell revealed in the 2024 docuseries Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV that he had been sexually abused as a teenager by dialogue coach Brian Peck, who is not related to Josh, viewers criticized several former Nickelodeon figures for not speaking publicly sooner.
Josh later posted a statement saying he had reached out to Bell privately and wanted to express support for survivors.
“Children should be protected,” he wrote at the time, adding that he hoped the series would help bring healing and necessary change.
Bell subsequently urged fans to “take it easy” on Josh. The pair later spoke together on a podcast, where Peck said he hadn’t understood what Bell had endured when they were young and expressed regret that he had been unaware.
While that chapter had largely settled, the new uproar has again placed Peck under a microscope online.
